What about the ROI manager where each ROI is independent of the others. 
Wouldn't storing the vector holding the ROI boundary be more compact than a 
bitplane for each of the ROIs (I am assuming -probably wrong? - that one needs 
to store the whole image bitmap of the overlay?)
