Hi Mark, 

Thanks for looking into this! A funny thing happened when I opened Fiji again
this morning: everything is working.

I don't know what changed; I had tried closing the program, closing all the
images, opening different images, fiddling around with the toolbar, etc.
yesterday, and nothing made a difference. However, now my images are opening
super fast, and the mouse over is working... We'll see if it lasts. If not,
I'll try all the things you suggested. (And yes, by the way, to your
confirmation - the issue I was having, in addition to the slow opening, was
that the status bar wouldn't change when I moved my cursor over a selected
image. But now it's working again).
