Glen, might I suggest trying with Java 7 or Java 8 instead of Java 6? Java 7
fixes many of Java 6's problems.

(As an aside: there will soon be a new version of the ImageJ launcher that
makes it easier to use Java 7 or 8 on OS X without needing to install Java 6
anymore.)
