Sorry for not linking this earlier, but there is a confirmed bug on the
SCIFIO/ImageJ2 side, specifically with the legacy layer:

This is leading to undesirable hard references to images that do not get
cleaned up when an ImagePlus is closed... so there is a true memory leak.
